DNA Testing Service

This clinic offers personal genetic services sold directly to consumers through a web-based portal. A national network of landing pages, local phone numbers, and local-market visibility has been established and is serviced through a virtual support center with very limited staff (1 full-time employee for support and 1 contracted sales person).

The personal genetics market is a 30-year-old market with significant growth. In 2010, the AABB estimated around 500,000 legal paternity tests sold through a limited number of accredited labs in the US. Legal paternity tests represent an estimated 40% of paternity tests sold in the US, which brings total estimated personal paternity tests sold each year to around 1.25 Million. Tests offered into this market are expanding, although the number of affiliate locations selling these services is shrinking, as only those with automated processes and strong lab relationships can compete.

The clinic has significant visibility on local-area searches using a proprietary link-building and set-up technology. They also have strong automation through a proprietary tracking system with an incredible level of reporting, process, and sales tracking (particularly for a smaller company). This company benefits from having an infrastructure for growth set up by a larger entity so that it can be run virtually from anywhere in the US. While personal paternity testing is a saturated market, many smaller affiliates cannot survive pricing pressure because they don’t have the infrastructure or operating capital to automate and scale their business.

The industry is ripe for consolidation. The company is well positioned as a top-tier support-based company, which means that even with automation to lead out in the industry; they do not have to compete primarily on price. While it does feel and respond to broad market pricing pressures, they are able to hold onto margins of $150-$300 per test for most types of tests. Audiology Clinic

Established in 1985, this clinic is a community-based office which adheres to a medical delivery model similar to an outpatient hospital speech and hearing clinic. The current clinical director recently retired as an adjunct instructor at a nearby medical school after teaching for 25 years, and so brings medical ties to the office environment. The staff, which began as one, has now grown to 5 audiologists and 1 speech pathologist who are dedicated to providing the highest quality services possible in the community.

The office serves both children and adults in a fairly equal mix. The children come from schools and the pediatric community. Pediatric services include diagnostics, hearing aids and FM. The adults come from the medical community, are self-referred, or referred through friends. Adult services are primarily geared toward hearing aid dispensing. The clinic has a strong repeat customer base, having dispensed in the community for 25 years. They also have a part time speech therapist who serves children only. In addition, the clinic contracts with an otolaryngology group to supply audiologic services and ENG (no hearing aids) in their two offices. The Center also serves a contingency of musicians who require diagnostics and hearing protection.

The clinic contracts with numerous insurance programs and is a Medicare participant. In 2000, a new office management system was installed to manage billing and coordinate with electronic billing of insurance companies; this also serves as a formal database of all patients. Medical Weight Loss & Wellness Center Franchises

These franchises offer medically supervised weight loss programs based on personal genetics, as well as wellness and lifestyle programs, nutritional and life coaching, nutritional supplements and exercise, relaxation and aesthetic treatments, and wellness and DNA testing.

The weight loss through wellness market is emerging, fueled by the fact that over 60% of Americans are overweight. The principal sources of direct competition for these centers are similar upscale centers, health and athletic clubs and spas, some of which are part of existing franchise chains. Other wellness and health related services and wellness supply outlets also are sources of indirect competition. Currently, there are no known centers that offer genetic testing and counseling as a part of weight loss and wellness.

In this program, a team of doctors (either naturopathic or allopathic), nurses and nutritionists use genetic testing as a basis for determining the most effective, personalized weight loss program for the particular individual, with monitoring to ensure that the weight loss is coming from fat, not lean muscle mass. The program uses specific additional components to help assure appropriate and rapid weight loss. To date, the centers have treated over 3,000 clients.

The typical location for a center is an 850 to 1,100 square foot space in a retail center. This allows for 3 minimum rooms and a waiting area. 1,100 square feet is recommended at the top end in order to provide an office for the owner and adequate storage of inventory.

A center is typically open from 9am-5:30pm Tuesday through Saturday and is staffed by a required minimum of 2 employees -- 3 is preferred. A physician, RN or LPN is required to be on-site during all business hours. If no physician is regularly on site, the physician comes to the center or video-conferences (in states that allow it) for 1st client appointments to write prescriptions and provide other services. There are currently four centers open in the Pacific Northwest.
